I’ve found that the average person is so bored, even irritated with their life, that they begin to become insanely dissatisfied, and well, that leads to just plain crazy! So crazy, in fact, that they do everything possible to escape the impending feeling of emptiness. That’s when dysfunction sets in, and people numb that empty feeling with whatever they can: Drinking, partying, eating, shopping, working, obsessive thinking, TV, porn, video games, etc... Boredom is the root of much "evil" and turns people into zombies, causes them to blame others for thier lack of creating vibrant experience, and even fabricate or elaborate gosspiy scenarios to focus on as a distraction from thier own unfilling life.
Does the following scenario sound familiar? Get up, go to a job we get little or no fulfillment from, go home, blame our partner or family for an unfulfilled existence, eat processed food that clouds our thinking and feeling, drink a bunch of alcohol to drown out everything, crash out with the TV on, and do it all over again the next day. Sure, there might be a few good moments added in-- like an occasional work out, socializing with friends and a vacation or two thrown in, but it’s virtually the same boring, monotonous crap day after day after day.
That’s usually the point when people finally put the remote down and ask, “What’s my purpose in life?” But what people often mistake for purpose, is actually experience. We CRAVE EXPERIENCE, and it that purpose will follow. We need a jolt of electricity pulsing through our veins to kick-start the engine!
Purpose can literally be found in EVERYTHING. Think about the simplest of examples: Loving and sharing affection and ideas with your family -- what could possibly be more purpose-filled than that? Yet most people spend more time aggravated at family and blaming them for their misery lack of experience, than truly appreciating them.
Volunteer at a soup kitchen, I guarantee you’ll feel more purpose-filled than you ever dreamed! There is no ordinary moment --just bored, lost and stuck people. It’s time to wake up and smell the roses, seriously!
The problem isn’t that we need more purpose-- it’s that we’re numb to experiencing the vast purpose that already exists.
Once you begin allowing yourself to indulge in the EXPERIENCE that’s already abundant in your life, untold purpose will unfold as well. I came to Argentina to learn and EXPERIENCE a new culture, a new people and to Tango! Every moment I’ve been here has been completely delicious... From the potent smell of the city and passion of the people (I’m infatuated with how they walk, talk, gesture and live their lives) to the extraordinary architecture here (I’m obsessed with the historic buildings which are infinitely intricate in design and detail.) I’ve found myself marveling a single door for, well who knows how long! Three-hour meals comprised of delectable flavors--- like the most amazing steak and wine I’ve ever tasted! OH MY GOD! And… seduction by The Tango—It’s so passionate and sensual that I literally cannot get enough!
This, my friends, is experiencing life--- and most purpose-filled as well. And this is only my free time! My work, well, there simply isn’t enough space to write the magnitude of purpose and experience which resides there! It’s all yours for the taking, or awaking to, as the case may be! And you don’t have to go to another country either, I find as much amazement in Atlanta as anywhere else!
Take Action!
1. Wake up!
Acknowledge that your search for purpose is over, and all you need to do is simply EXPERIENCE life.
2. Do what makes you feel most alive --
Jump out of a perfectly good airplane-- (as in skydiving!) That should give you a jolt! Or imagine for a solid 10 minutes that your family has been taken, gone forever. Then, really look at them. Marvel at the pure perfection of their existence. Sure they’re flawed, but who cares, that too can be an appreciation!
3. Do not make a list of “things to experience!”
I hate lists. List are designed to remind you of what you didn’t accomplish! So don’t make a list of what you want to experience, just begin SEEING EVERY SINGLE ELEMENT OF LIFE in a new light, in terms of the purpose it deserves. That’ll begin your journey of experiencing the magic in each day. In this single action, purpose will begin to pulse within you--- like the beautiful beat of The Tango.
Until next time,
Dance, my friends... Dance!
