Bettina was our intern in 2016 and she was a wonderful addition to the team.
She stayed on the island after finishing the internship, to work as an Online Business Manager at one of our partners and favourite companies, Screw The Cubicle.
We asked her to tell us a bit about how she got here and how Project Getaway changed her life 🙂
And we are now wishing her lots of luck in the entrepreneurial path she is currently embracing!
Hi, I’m Bettina and I support female entrepreneurs in building their empires. Three years ago, I graduated from university, packed my bags and moved to Indonesia as an intern for Project Getaway– and this changed my life forever.
How old were you when you first came to Bali and why did you choose this island for your internship?
I visited Bali for the first time in 2014 (I was 23 years old), the Indonesian island was the last stop of my 3-month backpacking trip across South East Asia. I immediately fell in love with this part of the world – the beautiful nature, the fascinating culture and the generosity of its people. Back home, I immediately googled “startups in Bali” and came across the article “Forget Silicon Valley, Meet Silicon Bali” which linked to Project Getaway – and the rest is history 😉
What did you find here (in Bali, at Livit, at Project Getaway?)
I still remember the day I arrived in Bali for my internship at Project Getaway. I was picked up by a driver who brought me to Livit near Sanur. I’ve never been to that part of Bali before. The next morning when I woke up I saw I was surrounded by rice fields and welcomed by the Livit team. I immediately felt at home and never wanted to leave! At Livit, I not only found a great place to work and learn, but also my Bali family ☺
Despite the hot climate, I was way more productive in Bali than back home as Livit took care of literally anything – from household management and laundry to grocery shopping and cooking – which meant I had some extra hours each day to go surfing or explore other parts of Bali. There are so many more positive things I could mention here from the regular skill shares with other startups to the regular team outings…the list is endless. Livit really showed me that there’s another way of doing business and that it’s possible to live life on your own terms and still have a thriving business.

Being an intern for Project Getaway…
…opened a whole new world to me! I’m so grateful for this opportunity – I don’t know where life would have taken me without PG – but it definitely would have been less adventurous! Moving to Bali and working with entrepreneurs was always a dream and PG made this dream come true and so much more! I met so many inspiring people who heavily influenced my path – from living a location independent life to starting my own company.
Who do you recommend PG?
If you’re an aspiring entrepreneur or business owner who want to try out a location independent life – sign up for Project Getaway! This event is so much more than a business retreat – it’s a community of likeminded people you’ll share a life-changing experience with!
What made you stay in Bali?
After PG I moved to Jakarta for a year and worked for a local VC. But I soon started to miss Bali – the beautiful nature, the work – play balance, the community of people who redefine the way we work and live. In 2017 I moved back to Bali and started to work as an Online Business Manager for coaches and consultants. The entrepreneurial community in Bali has grown exponentially in the past few years and it’s just amazing to connect with so many inspiring people in such a casual environment (beachfront business meetings with a coconut anyone?).
I’m so excited for 2019 – it’s going to be a great year for every entrepreneur! I’m looking forward to supporting more creators, expanding my network, and travelling to other parts of Indonesia. Also, I can’t wait for the legendary Project Getaway party!
Long-term, I’d like to spend half of the year in Bali and the other half in Europe, closer to my family ☺
